Magazines Part II

 Early Magazine Covers

in the mid-1700s magazines did not use what we think as cover. it was more like the second page of a book or a note book, a page with a table of contents. sometimes, if they had a cover it was a drawing modeled after a book. There was no description, all the information about it was inside the magazine.

II. The Poster Cover:
Pictures That Need No Words

from the 1890s to the 1960s, most of the magazines used the same type of cover. It was more like a poster illustrated by the outstanding professional illustrators in the late 1800, even though excellent photographs existed at that time. some of the cover looked as if they were painted to be frame in the wall. Many of the illustrators became nationally famous.

III. Pictures Married to Type

this magazines relied heavily on cover lines to draw the readers inside the magazine. cover lines were around since the late 1800s, but became an important part of magazines by the 1900s . most of the covers had a large title and a illustration.

IV. In the Forest of Words

by the 21st century cover lines were as important as pictures and illustrations, a powerful picture is not enough  for a magazine cover. Cover usually include photographs of nakedly-exposed models. Most of the poster covers are used for art magazines, music, travel, photography and specials magazines.
